Evwho is teddy bear?泰迪熊来历

Every night, all over the world, countless children take their loyal friend, the teddy bear, to bed with them. But where did these cuddly confidantes get their name? Oddly enough, from a US politician. Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919) was president of the United States from 1901 to 1909. As one of America's most conservation-minded presidents, he is credited with responsibility for significant advances in forestry, irrigation and land use. However, Roosevelt (known to his friends as 'Teddy') has also gone down in history as the inspiration behind the best-loved toy of all time.

   The bear that made history
In 1902, Roosevelt was called to settle a boundary dispute in Mississippi. His five-day visit there was 'packaged' as a bear hunt, with all the usual media coverage. However, the local black bears had evidently decided to boycott the event by vanishing into the forests! It was not until the final day that a single bear was tracked and cornered by the dogs and guide, ready for the President to take a pot shot. Some reports speak of an elderly bear being injured in the chase and Roosevelt ordering it to be killed humanely. But another account (the one undoubtedly preferred for children) tells of a young and helpless bearcub whose life was spared by the nature-loving President.

(Part Three)
Congratulations, Teddy!
The next day, a newspaper cartoon by Clifford Berryman showed the President refusing to shoot a black bear. The picture captured the public imagination. It also inspired a Brooklyn shopkeeper called Rose Michtom to make a cuddly velvet toy with shoe-button eyes, which she labelled 'Teddy's Bear'. It was a stroke of genius. The President allowed his name to be used as a marketing tool, and so many people ordered teddies that the Michtoms could not keep up with the demand. In October 1902, a German toy maker called Steiff produced a plush bear with moveable arms and legs. Within five years, the output had soared to an incredible 974,000! Nowadays, the teddy bear is undisputed Toy Number One all over the world, and his velvet ancestor – long cherished by the Roosevelt children – has a place of honour in the Smithsonian Museum in Washington DC.
