Dilemma with Cameras on Hats of Police Officers
Cameras have been installed onto the caps of patrolling police officers in a pilot police station in China's southwestern city of Kunming.
Some say the hi-tech equipment helps police officers perform their duties, but it has also generated fierce discussion in the public.
The Beijing Youth Daily carried an article, saying that while we welcome the advantages of the new equipment we should also see the other side of the matter. First of all, the videos recorded by the policeman's cameras might not show the complete story. Important proofs and facts are likely missing if the cameras are turned off occasionally. Secondly, privacy and business secrets might be exposed by these cameras when police officers enter into private business or residences.
Another article on China's Youth Daily says the cameras built onto the hats of security police officers can not record the officers themselves, thus the videos lack justice and fairness. This modern equipment could pose a potential threat to common people's daily lives.
Both paper called for a sound and fair surveillance system and updated technical support. Information processing system is required to destroy the content irrelevant to criminal and security cases.
Meantime, the public is to be assured that contents involving people's private lives and business secrets will be safe with the public security department.
