the fish suffered when the city gate was on fire  城门失火，殃及池鱼
    A long time ago,  there was a pond near a city.  One day,   the city gate was on fire.  A fish in the pond saw the burning gate and shouted to his friends,  "Look,  the gate is on fire. Let's go away!  Be quick!"
    But   the  other  fish laughed at it. "You coward! The gate is so far away. Why so  frightened?  You can go yourself if you like."
    The fish had no choice but to escape itself.
     The fire was burning harder and harder.  All the people in the city came to put out the fire. With pails or basins,  they took the water from the pond and poured it on the fire. At last, the fire was  put  out  with  some excited labor.
     The water in the pond, however,   became less and less,    and the fish that remained  struggled  in the dry pond and died of thirst for water at last.

城门失火，殃及池鱼
   
    从前有一座城市，城外有一条护城河。一天，城门失了火，一条鱼在水面上看见了，对它的同伴喊：“城门着火了，咱们快逃吧!”
    别的鱼却笑话他：“你这胆小鬼!城门离护城河这么远，你何必大惊小怪呢?要跑，你自己跑去!”
    那条鱼只好自己逃走了。
    城门的火越烧越大，城里的居民都赶来救火。有拿水桶的、有端脸盆的，纷纷从河中舀水往城门上泼。费了很大的劲，火终于被扑灭了。
    不过，护城河里的水却被舀干了，没有逃走的鱼都倒了霉、遭了殃，它们在干涸的河底苦苦挣扎，最后都渴死了。
