Can Internet companies survive without being at the head of innovation? Google's (GOOG) chief China rival Baidu (BIDU) has not only survived, but thrived as a company known more for adapting existing technologies for the Chinese market than for groundbreaking products. But as The Wall Street Journal reported Friday, increasing competition in the Internet space both in and outside China may make this a bigger challenge.
互联网公司如果不处于创新前沿能不能生存?谷歌(Google)在中国的主要竞争对手百度(Baidu),不仅生存下来了,而且还更多地因为把现有技术用于中国市场、而不是推出开创性产品而闻名。但正如《华尔街日报》周五报道的,随着中国国内外互联网行业的竞争越来越激烈,不引领创新的话恐怕是越来越难于生存了。


Baidu has given signs that it is trying to expand beyond its trademark we-do-China-better retort to accusations that it copies companies like Google, Wikipedia, and Yahoo. But CEO Robin Li's speech last year about the concept of 'box computing,' or the idea that a search box on the Baidu interface could more quickly provide meaningful results and be used for everything from starting other software programs to doing calculations to finding a date, was unclear and was panned as unoriginal by Chinese media(even though he said it in front of a massive, 50-meter wide screen).
