At the age of 33, she's not only made badminton history, but has also captured her greatest personal victory.

Zhang Ning shows her winning smile again after playing here in Beijing, in her last Olympics. Four years ago, she won the women's singles gold in Athens at the age of 29, setting the record as the oldest badminton gold medalist. Zhang Ning has now broken her own record.

Zhang Ning, women's badminton singles champion, said, "I'm 33-years-old and I made it to the finals in the Beijing Games, I believe it was tenacity that got me this gold medal."

Zhang Ning was tearful after the match. And she says she started to doubt 100 days before the Games that she could win a medal... after swelling in her knee refused to go down. But the desire to play in her own country kept her going.

Zhang Ning, women's badminton singles champion, said,"I kept on encouraging myself. Because the Games are in Beijing I wanted to be here. I persevered, I tried very hard. I did a lot of training... this gold certainly didn't come easily."

Although she is at the peak of her condition, Zhang Ning says she will soon conclude her professional career. But she has confidence in China's future in badminton.

Zhang Ning, women's badminton singles champion, said,"China's upcoming athletes always have willpower and strength, and our training methods have always been advanced. I believe China's young players will keep on leading in world badminton."

Saturday's victory was an emotional one for Zhang, and a perfect one for the athlete who has given so much of her life to the sport.
