Dazzling lights, a myriad of colors, and indispensable elements mark this grand opening ceremony. It is the first time a city has played a host to such a national tournament. The former five were all organized by provincial governments. 74 cities and profession athletic associations are taking part. A record of more than 6,000 athletes will compete for glory, making it the biggest in city games history.

The lighting of the torch was the highlight of the ceremony. Wuhan has been preparing for the games for five years. Among the 60 competition venues, 28 are newly built and 12 have been renovated. All the construction cost about 270 million US dollars. The tournament features 24 sports and 288 events and will run until November the fourth.
