今天是星期天，方向标和大家一起来学习一个习惯用语是：To chew the fat. Chew

作为一个动词，它的意思是：吃东西时嚼东西的“嚼”。 

     可是，to chew the fat并不是嚼肥肉。这是一个俗语，它的意思是“几个朋友、同事或一些熟人坐在一起随便聊天，不管是天南地北，或是张家长李家短，想讲什么就讲什么。”

下面是一个例子。 
      例1: After my next class I’m going back to my room to catch upon my sleep. I was up until four this morning chewing the fat 

with my roommate and a couple of friends who dropped in. 

      这个人说：上完下一节课我就要回房间去睡觉。我昨天晚上跟我同房间的同学和其他两个来玩的朋友一起聊天，一直聊到今天早上四点才睡觉。 

    
         不管是中国人还是美国人，找对象要志同道合这恐怕是普遍的。下面是一个教授在说他的同事。 

 
      例2: Jack is a quiet man who writes books. In fact, he has published several highly-regarded books on Asian history. But all his wife likes to do is chew the fat with her friends all day

 long. I’m surprised that their marriage still holds together. 

     这个教授说：杰克是一个很安静的人，他一直在写书。其实，他已经出版了好几本有关亚洲历史的书，受到很高的评价。可是，他太太所喜欢的就是成天和她那些朋友聊东家长西家短。他们的婚姻居然没出问题，我真是感到很奇怪。
