jump the gun

在赛跑时，所有的参赛者都应在发令枪响以后才能起跑，这是规则，也是常识。但出于心理上的紧张，常有人在枪响之前就冲了出去的，这种情况在英语里叫做jump the gun。这里的gun不是指什么别的枪，而是指赛跑时用的发令枪。现在这个源出于赛跑的成语并不限于描绘起跑时的偷跑，它可以用来指任何在不到指定的时间便开始做某事的迹象：

He was so nervous that he jumped the gun twice.
他太紧张了，结果两次偷跑。

The exam was supposed to start at 10 a.m. but our teacher jumped the gun and handed out the paper 5 minutes before 10.
考试规定在十点开始，但我们的老师提早了，在九时五十五分就发了考卷。

We all agreed that each of us should give our birthday present to Mum on the morning of her birthday but List jumped the gun and gave hers on the night before.
我们都同意在妈妈生日的那天早上把生日礼物给她，但莉萨却提前在前一天晚上就送上了她的礼物。

far cry

far是一个表示空间距离的形容词，cry是个表示声音的名词，这两个词似乎是不可能搭配在一起的，但把它们放在一起却构成了一个习惯的表达方式，far cry不表示声音，它却表示“差别”，表示差别很大，以致到了毫不相干，完全是两码事这样的程度，它在句中用作表语，前面用不定冠词a，但cry从不用复数，表示和什么不相同，用介词from:

I wonder what has happened to him. His academic records this term are a far cry from what he used to achieve.
真不知道他是怎么搞的，他这学期的成绩和他以前的成绩相比，可是差了一大截。

The reporter’s version of the story is a far cry from what actually happened. He has obviously distorted the fact.
记者的说法和实际发生的事情之间距离很大，他显然把事实给歪曲了。

I find it difficult to adjust myself to Professor Chamberlain’s way of teaching, which is a far cry from what I have been used to.
我觉得很难适应钱伯伦教授的教学方法，它和我所习惯的方法差别很大。
