Break the ice:

break the ice

At the class meeting, there was a long, embarrassing silence after the teacher’s opening remarks. Finally Jack broke the ice by raising a question.

Although we did not learn very much during the 3-week training course, yet the ice has been broken and further learning has now been made possible.

take the bull by the horns

可见take the bull by the horns(抓住牛角)是要有相当的胆量和冒险精神的。

He knew that to ask for higher pay would displease his boss, but anyway he decided to take the bull by the horns.

Taking the bull by the horns, he overcame all the obstacles and succeeded in the end.

To sail on the sea on a stormy night like this was a great risk but the crew was determined to take the bull by the horns.
