build castles in the air

castle是古代欧洲的城堡，和任何一种建筑物一样，城堡必须在打下了坚固的地基之后，方可在地面上实实在在地建造起来。在空气中建造城堡，无疑是件完全不可能的事。

因此，build castles in the air就用以表示“作一些不切合实际的空想”，或者说“白日做梦”，和我们中国人用“空中楼阁”、“海市蜃楼”来表示不可能实现，只存在于幻想中的事情的说法十分相近。

这个成语中的the air间或也有人用Spain一词代替的，即build castles in Spain：

You’d better stop building castles in the air and get down to some practical work.
你最好不要再作种种空想，该踏踏实实做些事了。

When he was young he used to build castles in the air and thus did not succeed in anything.
他年轻时爱做白日梦，结果一事无成。

a feather in one’s cap

据说在美洲印第安人中曾经流行过这样的做法：在战斗中每杀死一个敌人，便在自己的帽子上插一支羽毛，作为一种荣誉的标志，在许多其他的民族中，也存在过类似的做法。中国古代也曾经有过用翎毛表功的做法，英语中从这种做法产生了a feather in one’s cap这个成语，虽然这种做法已成为历史，但这个成语却在英语中保留了下来，转意为“值得骄傲、引以为豪的事情”：

To be chose to play for the distinguished guest at the reception was really a feather in the cap for the young pianist.
被选中在招待会上为那位贵宾演奏，对那位年轻的钢琴家来说是一种殊荣。

Many people think it a feather in my cap to be appointed chairman of the department at such a young age.
许多人认为在我这样年轻的时候能被指定为系主任是一件值得骄傲的事情。

It was a feather in our cap to have been received by the Queen in Buckingham Palace.
在白金汉宫受到皇后的接见，我们都感到受宠若惊。
