《赵氏孤儿》英文片名意译：Sacrifice
　　作为中国第一部流传到欧洲的戏剧，《赵氏孤儿》曾经被伏尔泰改编成L'orphelin de la Maison de Tchao，而后又被改成英文版The Orphan of China《中国孤儿》。原著的译名则是The Orphan of Zhao，非常直译。而这次陈凯歌版的电影改编，则采用了全新的意译方式，起名Sacrifice牺牲。

　　《赵氏孤儿》被誉为是东方的哈姆雷特，“复仇”是其中的一大主题，而主人公牺牲自己的儿子保全赵氏遗孤，并将其抚养成人，报仇雪恨的故事，更是彰显了忠臣义士的忠诚与牺牲精神。对于不了解原著的西方观众，一个简洁而意味深长的Sacrifice比起The Orphan of Zhao要吸引人得多。

　　赵氏孤儿，元朝的杂剧，作者为纪君祥，是为一部悲剧，内容取材自春秋时代的晋国的历史事件─「下宫之难」。此剧描绘忠臣、义士、节妇、孝子，无不凛然 如生；忠愤之气，贯彻全篇。后来传到法国，伏尔泰将其改编为五幕剧本（名:L'orphelin de la Maison de Tchao，1735年出版），是中国最早传至欧洲的戏曲作品。

　　故事描写晋国重臣赵盾家族被屠岸贾陷害灭门，当时赵盾已经病逝，其子赵朔、其弟赵同、赵括、赵婴齐全部被杀。只有赵朔的妻子庄姬因是晋成公的姐姐，幸免于难。其友程婴、公孙杵臼拼死救助赵朔的遗腹子赵武，公孙杵臼让程婴向屠岸贾告发，牺牲了自己和程婴的儿子。赵武被程婴抚养长大成人，报仇雪恨，消灭了屠氏宗族。
The Orphan of Zhao, or Orphan of the House Tcho (趙氏孤兒) is a Chinese play of the Yuan Dynasty, attributed to someone named Ji Junxiang (紀君祥), about whom almost nothing is known. Based on an episode in Shiji, the play has its full name The Great Revenge of the Orphan of Zhao Family (趙氏孤兒大報仇). Loyalty is the theme of the history play Zhaoshi guer (The Orphan of Zhao), written in the second half of the 13th century. In it the hero sacrifices his son to save the life of young Zhao so that Zhao can later avenge the death of his family. It is the first Chinese play known in Europe. Joseph Henri Marie de Prémare translated the play into French as Tchao-chi-cou-eulh, ou L'orphelin de la maison de Tchao, tragédie chinoise, which was collected in Jean Baptiste Du Halde's Description géographique, historique, chronologique, politique et physique de l'empire de la Chine et de la Tartarie Chinoise, published in 1735 (the play was published separately in 1755). Thomas Hatchett (active 1721-1741) published an adaptation of the play in English, "The Orphan of China" (1741) that changes the ending significantly so that the play conforms to classical conventions of the three unities.
