• 圣诞老人的形象从哪里来？

据说，圣诞老人的形象来自于小亚细亚的一位名为“St. Nicholas”的主教。他一生中做了很多善事，总是悄悄地帮助村子里的穷人，这种“偷偷送东西”的行为，是不是和我们印象中的圣诞老人有点像呢？

• 为什么圣诞老人被叫作“Santa Claus”呢？

其实，“Santa Claus”的这个称呼，主要是美国人在用的。我们先来看这段话：

The first Europeans who arrived in the New World brought St. Nicholas and his stories with them. In the sixteenth century, reformers and counter-reformers took every step possible to curb the Saint Nicholas-related customs, but they could not succeed. The common people in Europe loved the saint so much that not only did his customs survive in the European subcontinent, but they were later carried overseas as well.

从中我们可以知道，美国的圣诞老人的确来源于St. Nicholas这个形象。

至于为嘛叫“Santa Claus”，这主要是因为在荷兰，英文的“St. Nicholas”被读作“Sinterklaas”，传到美国去后，美国人不习惯这样的发音，于是就改成了现在家喻户晓的“Santa Claus”啦。
