International Olympic Committee chief Jacques Rogge said on Thursday that he is confident in preparations for next summer's Beijing Olympics. Rogge was briefing reporters in New York after attending a United Nations general assembly.
Jacques Rogge said, "We are very happy by the progress of the preparation of the Chinese. We had wonderful test events, the venues are ready, their operational capacity is very big. There is a huge enthusiasm of the public to buy tickets and to watch the games."
Rogge said Beijing's air quality could delay some endurance events, but that delaying competition because of weather or temperature conditions was not unusual at any Olympics. He also said he believed that Beijing's measures to improve the air quality would be effective.
Jacques Rogge said, "But if the levels of atmospheric pollution on a particular day would be too high for long distance endurance sports, we could postpone them for a couple of hours, but this is not a major concern, we've done that in previous games also."
