eat humble pie

pie即“批”，一种带馅的点心，你一定吃过了apple-pie(苹果批)、lemon-pie(柠檬批)，meat-pie(肉批)。那么humble pie是用什么做馅的呢？humble是个形容词，解释是“卑谦的”，但实际上，这个成语中的humble一词是umbles这个词的讹化。umbles指鹿的内脏，以前人爱吃鹿肉，鹿肉供主人食用，鹿的心、肝之类杂碎便做成馅饼供仆人食用，因此eat humble pie便是“低三下四、忍气吞声”的意思：

He did not have a happy childhood because his mother died in childbirth and his father remarried, and living with his stepmother and her own children, he had to eat humble pie.

Pandora’s Box

这个英语成语似乎已为汉语所接受，在汉语中已有“潘朵拉的盒子”这一直译的说法，它的实际意义是“灾祸的根源”。那末Pandora是谁呢？为什么Pandora的盒子是万恶之源呢？Pandora原来是希腊神话中的一个人物。火神普罗米修斯违抗了宙斯的意志，给人类带来了火种，激怒了这位主神。于是宙斯令他的儿子创造一个名为Pandora的妩媚少女，让她带着一个装着种种可以制造人间灾难的礼盒来到人间，以在世界上制造灾难，散布祸种，以泄仇恨：

Some people think that money always brings them happiness but they forget that sometimes it is a Pandora’s Box.
有些人以为金钱总能给他们带来幸福，但他们忘记了金钱有时是灾祸之源。

Scientific inventions can benefit mankind; on the other hand, they sometimes might open Pandora’s Box.
