Tune: Plucking Laurel Branch
Hall of Lake and Hill
Zhao Shanqing
Outside eight windows water dissolves in moonlight,
Orioles and swallows dance on the stage in a line
Before poets and drinkers of wine.
The dancers’ fans bring a breeze light,
They dance like clouds or pear blossoms white,
With fragrance sweet their powdered faces spread.
The old state replaced by the new with candles red,
The white-haired still remember its newly built hall.
Dancers in their changed palace attire
Awaken envious flowers’ desire,
But lakes and hills care not for the state’s rise and fall.
Recollection of Parting by the River in Autumn
To the Tune of Jubilation All over the World
Zhao Shanqing
Gazing into the sky at dusk,
Autumn waters, misty and vast.
The setting sun’s kissing the hillside,
Bathed in the sun beam are geese , a flight.
Beautiful words of love songs,
From the rosy lips they’re sung,
On board the splendid boat before sailing,
In the west wind silk dress wet with weeping.
Two phoenix-shaped hairpins, one for each,
Fill up the nautilus cups for the couple loving,
As they are the love-birds parting. 【
